Good grunge: Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam (old)
The rest are horrible

Don't just center out the US; in Canada, the popular music is horrible. I mean, I'm ashamed to be from the same country as Nickelback (ugh) and... you know.

What is metal and what is not? Very good question. When i was start to hear this kind of music back at the early '80s people call bands like Whitesnake metal. Now some people call Iron Maiden hard rock. Soundgarden, Alice In Chains are Grunge bands? Just play an old Black Sabbath and an old Led Zeppelin album and then listen to the "Badmotorfinger" album. Is it metal or not? Some people say that the members of metal bands MUST have a long hair. Ok then Robert Halford must be a pop singer and even worst because he is a gay he is not a "BIG MAN" like other big men in metal music... Bon Jovi is a f*****n poser? And what about Slayer at the photos of their first albums pretending that the ketchup they have at their mouths are blood? Who is the poser and who is the ridiculous? Some fanatic idiots Dare to say that metal is the music of white race. And what about the amazing Living Colour? They are not metal because they are black? Who is "heavier" singer Tom Araya or Tony Martin? Who is bigger rebel
Geoff Tate at "Neue Regel" or Glenn Benton with his "satanic-antichrist"
-laugh please- lyrics? Anyway who am i or anyone else to set the limits of what is metal and what is not?

Amen.

What do you mean about Glen Benton?

My friend Mercenarion all i want to say is only one simple thing. Hard Rock/Metal music has expanded its boundaries so much that it is absolutely impossible to determine the limits of this kind of music. And as about Glenn Benton and all the "Glenn Bentons" of this planet i would say only this: It's very easy to pretent the "anticristian" and the "heavy guy" posing your brant new tatoos at the camera but what about music? And even worse when he interviewed has admitted that what he says is to entertain his audience and Nothing more? I think Bon Jovi is more honest guy because the only thing that he claimed is all he wants to do is write good songs because he realises one simple thing. When you call yourself a musician first and most of all you must learn how to write good songs. No matter if  your name is Tony Iommi or Steve Harris or Tom Araya or Chris DeGarmo or Jimi Hendrix. The only thing that people will pay attention when your career is gonna finish is how many great songs you left behind and not how many tatoos your body has.

P.S.: Excuse me for my English. I have many years to write this language.

Yes, the heavy guy point makes sense, but he isn't pretending with the anti-Christian part. Glen is a Theistic Satanist.
That is true about Bon Jovi though. You have good points, whitedragon.

You kinda mess all subjects together and it comes out a bit funny , but i find myself to agree with most .
Each time i have a look at this topic i am ready to lock it . Good to see some members are more openminded .

I like metal but Grunge is a fucking animal!

This is fucking retarded. I don't say that Bullet for my Valentine/Slipknot/deathcore aren't metal because I don't like them, I say it because it's an objective observation. Do you know why it's called metalCORE? Cause it's a mixture of melodic Death Metal and Hardcore punk. Most metalcore/deathcore takes more influence from the Hardcore punk side of the spectrum (as well as incorporating a myriad of other non-metal influences), which distances it far enough from the metal spectrum so that it shouldn't be considered metal.

Besides, why give a fuck what others consider what is metal and what isn't? The criteria you give to music is purely subjective and varies from person to person-no two people will have the exact same opinion on ANYthing art-related. It's not like just because a band isn't metal, that Means you can't enjoy their music anymore. It's just a genre. It doesn't mean the music is inherently better if it's metal. Why don't YOU Decide for YOURself what YOU consider metal and listen to what YOU want?

To Enigmatick, well said.
I think that bands like Slipknot (well, early Slipknot) and B4MV are metal, but that's just my opinion.
And of course a lot of the people who argue wether or not a band is metal are usually the type of people that can't listen to anything but stuff you can headbang to. Sorta like when Empyrium switches from symphonic Black Metal to neofolk. (Which in my opinion was one of the best genre-transtitions any band has every done).
